Blackberry Z10 vs Lumia 920

The Nokia Lumia 920 and the BlackBerry Z10 are two of the much hyped smartphones released this year. Whereas the Lumia 920 was launched on the latest Windows Phone 8 platform, the Blackberry Z10 was the first handset to be launched on the BlackBerry 10 platform. We do a comparison between the two smartphones to see which would be the better phone to own.

Design

The Lumia 920 has unibody polycarbonate casing with vibrant colors of Black, white, red, cyan and yellow. The BlackBerry Z10 comes in the conventional black and white colours alone. With dimensions of 5.12 x 2.58 x 0.35 inches and weighing 137.5grams, the BlackBerry 10 is quite light compared to the Lumia 920 that has dimensions of 5.13 x 2.79 x 0.42 inches weighing 185 grams. Lumia 920’s heavy battery, floating lens and wireless charging components add to its heavy weight. Also, Lumia 920 offers two of its models in scratch resistant casing.

Display

The Blackberry Z10 has a 4.2 inches Capacitive LCD touch screen with display resolution of 768 x 1280 pixels and 355 ppi pixel density. The Lumia 920 has a 4.5 inch IPS LCD capacitive touch screen with screen resolution of 768 x 1280 pixel offering pixel density of 332 ppi.

The Lumia 920 with its slightly bigger IPS LCD display and Nokia’s Pure Motion HD+ which allows smooth transition and ultra-sensitive touch screen make it easier to operate and view.

Processor & RAM

Both smartphones have the same 1.5 GHz Qualcomm dual core Snapdragon S4 processor. However, the Z10 offers 2GB of RAM which is significantly higher than the Lumia 920’s 1GB of RAM. With its smaller screen size and the higher amount of RAM, the BlackBerry Z10 is the winner on this front, offering a faster and smoother browsing experience.

Operating System

The Nokia Lumia 920 is built on the Windows 8 platform which is all set to beat the other operating systems to the number one position. The BlackBerry 10 has been newly developed exclusively for BlackBerry phones, and is in fact making its debut with the Z10. The Windows 8 offers more number of apps. However, both phones have unique navigation experience with the Windows 8’s Live Tiles and BlackBerry 10’ gesture-based “flow” navigation.

Camera

The Lumia 920 has an 8.7MP rear camera with optical image stabilization, autofocus and dual-LED flash and video recording at 1080p with video stabilization. It has a 1.3 MP front camera. The Z10 has a 8MP Rear Camera, which can record 1080p Full HD Videos and a 2MP Front Camera for Video calls. The Lumia 920 offers Nokia’s Pureview technology that gives a great deal of image stability and clarity. With a more powerful camera, we pick the Lumia 920 as the winner.

Memory & Battery

The Lumia 920 has 32GB internal memory which is not expandable, which is typical of Windows Phone 8 OS phones. The BlackBerry Z10 has 16GB internal storage which can be expanded up to 64 GB externally via microSD card.

The Lumia 920 has a 2000mAh battery offering talktime of up to 17 hrs (2G) and 10 hrs (3G), and standby of 400 hrs. While the BlackBerry Z10 has an 1800mAh battery offering talktime of up to 10 hrs (2G/3G) and standby of 312 hrs. The Lumia 920 definitely has the more powerful battery

Verdict

Both phones have great features with main difference arriving in the design and operating systems. The BlackBerry enthusiasts will obviously prefer the Z10 for its BBm service, while the Nokia and Windows enthusiasts would prefer the Lumia 920. SO, ultimately it would be the buyer’s choice.
