For most of us in today’s world of technology, smartphones have become an intricate part of our lives. People are always in search of something new, even when advanced Android mobiles like Nexus One, HTC desire, Droid, Galaxy, etc., are available providing them with everything they want. Regardless of what these Android mobiles offer, people still search to see if these Android devices are worth all the hype. Android is one among today’s cutting edge technologies with features that nobody can even imagine. Whether it is the flexible customization features or HTML 5 compatibility, Android phones really work wonders.
When it comes to HTML 5 compatibility, you can mail, chat, surf, upload and do anything you want with your Android mobile. You can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots or even company’s intranets with your Android device. But, even with all these facilities, certain Android devices like Motorola Xoom tablet failed. Motorola Xoom tablet lacked HTTP Proxy settings for using it on corporate network. Nowadays while most workplaces are Wi-Fi enabled with a proxy configuration, there also remains a million dollar question – “How to Setup Wireless Proxy”?
Setting a proxy server for a wireless network connection is quite an easy task. But before setting the proxy server, you need to root your Android mobile and install Custom Rom that supports proxy connection. After installing Custom Rom, you can use the following steps to set the proxy server.
Collect all the required information about the proxy server from the network administrator.
- Go to the Wireless & Networks option in the Settings Menu in the Applications tab.
- Ensure that the wireless network is enabled. Connect your device to the network you want to set proxy server for.
- Check the list of networks available in the Wi-Fi settings and tap on the network you are connected with till the menu is displayed.
- Click on Modify Network – Proxy settings and then enable Manual settings.
- Now, enter the required details like Proxy host name and proxy port number. You also have options to enter domain names. These are the websites for which you think proxy need not be used. For instance, in a corporate network, intranet websites can be blocked.
- Once you are done with all these, click on Save.
However, this process of implementing proxy settings changes with different versions of Android. In Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread, the process is pretty easy and more similar to the steps mentioned above.
When it comes to Ice Cream Sandwich, all you need to do is to follow the path below:
Steps :
- Settings
- Wireless and Networks
- Press and hold the network for which you want add information
- Modify Network
- Show Advanced Settings
- Proxy settings & IP settings options
- Change the Proxy to Manual
- Enter proxy information
- Save
The set up process for Gingerbread starts with:
Steps:
- Menu
- Settings
- Wireless and Networks
- Wi-Fi settings
- Advanced
- Wi-Fi proxy
- Turn on proxy and enter the host name and port number
- Save
While it’s true that this process is very easy in Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread, the fact that it’s apparently annoying in Honeycomb can’t be denied. But, there are numerous apps available in the Android market like ProxyDroid, HTTP Proxy setting, Autoproxy, etc. that also works well in Honeycomb.
These apps help in setting up a proxy server on your Android devices. It’s up to you to either set up the proxy server manually or get the help of these apps to set up proxy for your Android device.
Great tutorial. I never know that Setting up a proxy server for a wireless network connection is that much easy. Thanks for sharing.
